Hanging Shelves in Surrey Homes

Hanging shelves can look simple, but getting them secure and level depends on the wall type, the weight they need to hold and the fixings used. Shelves that are not fitted properly can work loose over time or pull away from the wall. We hang shelves for homes across Surrey, fitting everything carefully so shelves are straight, stable and suitable for everyday use, whether they are decorative or used for storage.

How Long Does Hanging Shelves Take?

Most shelf hanging jobs take between 20 and 40 minutes per shelf, depending on the size of the shelf, the wall type and the fixings required. Simple shelves going into solid walls can often be fitted quickly once the position is confirmed.

Heavier shelves, shelves going into plasterboard or stud walls, or multiple shelves that need to be aligned accurately can take longer. When booking, we will ask what type of shelves you are fitting and where they are going so enough time is allowed to fit them securely and level without rushing.

What to Expect When We Hang Your Shelves

Hanging shelves properly is about using the right fixings for the wall type and making sure the shelf is positioned to carry the weight it is intended to hold. When your Surrey Handyman arrives, the job is approached carefully so the shelves are secure, level and finished neatly.

Checking the wall type

We start by identifying the wall type, as solid masonry, plasterboard, stud walls or dot and dab walls all need different fixings. This helps make sure the shelf is supported properly.

Assessing shelf size and weight

The size of the shelf and what it will be used for are taken into account. Heavier shelves or shelves used for storage need stronger fixings than decorative shelves.

Marking out position and height

We measure and mark the shelf position carefully before drilling. If you have a specific height or layout in mind, this is checked and confirmed first.

Fixing the shelf securely

The shelf brackets or fixings are installed using suitable anchors and screws for the wall. Everything is tightened properly so the shelf sits firmly against the wall.

Levelling and alignment

Once fixed, the shelf is checked to make sure it is level and aligned correctly, especially where multiple shelves are being fitted together.

A tidy finish

After fitting, we clear away dust and debris and leave the area tidy. You are welcome to check the shelf position and stability before we leave.

Other Items We Can Hang for You

Alongside hanging shelves, our handymen can help with a wide range of wall mounted items around your home. If you are updating a room or fitting several items at once, we can often complete everything during the same visit.

We also hang and install:

  • Pictures, artwork and photo frames
  • Mirrors of all sizes
  • TV brackets and media units
  • Curtain rails, blinds and poles
  • Bathroom cabinets and small wall units

If you have more than one item to hang, just let us know when booking so we can allow enough time and make sure everything is fitted neatly and securely.

Dan Collins visited this morning at 8 a.m. A very pleasant man.
He took down old kitchen blind which was tricky and replaced it with a new one.
He then removed an old broken loo seat which was very awkward with rusty screws underneath the toilet bowl.
He then reattached connector for sink stopper in the bathroom sink
Everything was very well done with no fuss. I am so pleased..
