How Long Does It Take to Fix a Dripping Tap?

Many dripping tap repairs can be completed in around 30 minutes, particularly where the issue is a worn washer or cartridge and access is straightforward. In some cases, the most time consuming part of the job is turning off the water supply.

Knowing where your stop valve is and making sure it is accessible can help speed things up. Stop valves are often under the sink, but they can also be located outside the property or in less obvious places, especially in homes that have been extended. If a stop valve is stiff or does not move easily, spraying it with a penetrating oil before our visit can help. We are also able to free up most exposed or lightly corroded valves as part of the job.

What to Expect When We Fix a Dripping Tap

Fixing a dripping tap starts with identifying where the leak is coming from and making sure the water supply can be isolated safely. When your Surrey Handyman arrives, he will check the tap, locate the stop valve and talk through what is likely to be causing the drip before starting work.

Checking the tap and isolating the water

We inspect the tap to understand whether the issue is coming from a washer, cartridge or internal seal. Before dismantling anything, we make sure the water is turned off safely, either at the local isolation valve or the main stop valve if needed.

Dismantling the tap carefully

Once isolated, the tap is taken apart carefully to avoid damaging fittings or surrounding surfaces. Older taps and modern mixers are handled differently, and we work methodically to reach the faulty part.

Replacing worn parts

Dripping taps are often caused by worn washers, cartridges or seals. We replace the faulty components where possible, making sure the new parts are fitted correctly so the tap closes fully.

Reassembling and testing

After the repair, the tap is reassembled and the water supply restored. We test the tap properly to make sure the drip has stopped and that everything is working as it should.

Freeing stiff valves if needed

If the stop valve is stiff or partially seized, we can often free it up during the visit so it works more smoothly in the future.

A tidy finish

Once the repair is complete, we clean the area and leave everything tidy. You are welcome to check the tap and ask any questions before we leave.

No. We can do this as part of the job. If you know where your stop valve is and it is accessible, it can help speed things up, but it is not essential.

If parts are badly worn or obsolete, we will explain the options before going any further. This may involve sourcing replacement parts or discussing a tap replacement if repair is not practical.
