Book an Electrician for PAT Testing
Booking an electrician for PAT testing is straightforward with Surrey Handyman. We arrange for a qualified electrician to attend your property, assess the number and type of appliances and carry out the required visual inspections and electrical tests. Whether you are a landlord preparing for a tenancy, a small business reviewing workplace safety or operating from a home office, we provide organised testing with clear communication from start to finish.
After the testing is complete, you will receive a clear report outlining the results, including any appliances that require attention.
How Long Does PAT Testing Take?
The time required for PAT testing depends on the number and type of appliances being tested. For a small office, rental property or home based workspace, testing can often be completed within one to two hours. Larger premises with a higher volume of equipment will take longer.
Each appliance requires a visual inspection as well as electrical testing, and time is allowed to label and record the results properly. We will confirm an estimated timescale once we understand how many items need to be tested, so you know what to expect on the day.

What to Expect During PAT Testing
PAT testing involves both visual inspection and electrical testing to confirm that portable appliances are safe to use. When your electrician arrives, they will review the appliances to be tested, carry out the appropriate checks and record the results clearly. The process is organised and methodical, with minimal disruption to your property or workplace.
We begin with a visual inspection
Many electrical faults are identified through careful visual checks. We inspect plugs, cables, casings and visible damage before any electrical testing takes place. Appliances that show obvious wear or damage are flagged immediately.
Electrical testing of each appliance
Each portable appliance is tested using calibrated PAT testing equipment. This checks insulation resistance, earth continuity and overall electrical safety in line with current guidance.
Clear labelling
After testing, appliances are labelled to indicate whether they have passed or require attention. This makes it easy to see the testing status at a glance.
Detailed reporting
You will receive a clear report listing the appliances tested and the results. This documentation can be retained for your records and used to demonstrate compliance where required.
Advice on failed items
If any appliances fail testing, we will explain the reason and advise on whether repair or replacement is recommended.
Minimal disruption
Testing is carried out efficiently and with care. We aim to keep disruption to a minimum, particularly in working environments, and leave the area tidy once testing is complete.

PAT Testing FAQs
PAT testing, or Portable Appliance Testing, is the process of inspecting and electrically testing portable appliances to ensure they are safe to use. It combines visual checks with electrical testing equipment to identify faults or damage.
There is no law that states PAT testing must be carried out annually, but landlords and employers have a legal duty to ensure electrical equipment is safe. Regular testing is one recognised way to demonstrate compliance.
The frequency depends on the type of property and how the appliances are used. Rental properties, offices and higher risk environments may require more frequent testing than low use settings. We can advise based on your circumstances.
Portable appliances include items that plug into a socket and can be moved, such as kettles, microwaves, extension leads, computers, printers and power tools.
Landlords must ensure that electrical equipment they provide is safe. PAT testing is commonly used to support this responsibility, particularly in furnished rental properties.
